We’ll admit, we’re no pro when it comes to meditation.  For too long, we thought lying in savanasa at the end of yoga class was good enough – right?

Wrong.

Like stuck-in-traffic with a case of road rage that no amount of savanasa can save you from  – wrong.

Since opening ourselves up to daily meditation (thanks to Meditation Teacher and Spiritual Coach, Pam Butler), not only have we lost the road rage, we’ve learned how to take moments out of our day and be still.  To hit ‘pause’ and just breathe.

Often, we’ll do it while waiting in our car at our daughter’s school.  Instead of reaching for our phone, we’ll turn our car off, close our eyes and go into a relaxed, calm state.

So lovely is this tonic, we’re doing it daily.  One of our favourite times is first-thing in the morning before rising out of bed. We’ll check-in with our self and focus on our breath.  Calm, deep and focused, as if we’re setting the pace for the day ahead. One that’ll carry us through whatever ups and downs and craziness that typically follows.

So what do we think about when we meditate?

We try not to think at all.  We try to focus on our breath, the sounds outside our window, the air, or just stillness itself.

Sure, thoughts will come in – what to buy for dinner, did I remember to call so-and-so…But then we’ll catch our thoughts, take a relaxed breath, and return to our focus.

Even the expert meditators will say it’s completely normal to allow your thoughts to come and go.  It happens to us all.  So don’t sweat it.  With time and practice, this will become less of a burden.

And then one day, you’ll realize inside of you is an ability to hit pause whenever you choose. To disconnect, and be still.  To take a deep breath and just be.  Be calm.  Be focused on nothing – except the pure joy of letting go.  It’s unreal just how addictive this peace will become.

The present moment will begin to feel – just like that, a present you can give yourself whenever you choose it.
