From healthy restaurants to seriously good shopping, it’s hard to top LA. We traveled there recently for the Goop Wellness Summit, and while our time was brief, our love for this city only grew fonder.
That said, LA can also be tough to navigate and traffic can be painful. But with Uber on your phone, and a steady amount of cold brew for the road, there’s nowhere you can’t get to. On that note, here’s a few of our top LA picks…
Where accommodations go, LA options tend to be somewhat pricey or of motel-caliber. For something that’s more on the splurge scale, (and why not?), The Peninsula Hotel in Beverly Hills gets our top nods. Along with super-luxe suites, it boasts a beautiful outdoor pool, spa, insta-worthy high tea, plus a cocktail bar that’s destination worthy on its own. For an option that’s more middle of the road, we found The Carlyle plenty fine. A boutique hotel close to Beverly Hills, the suites are generously sized, clean and comfortable.
Tantris had been on our radar since it opened a short time ago, and my, how it exceeded our expectations. In a nutshell, it’s a yogi’s dream destination – and not just for its infrared heated classes. Along with two dedicated studios for practice, there’s also an energy café, retail boutique, lounge, stunning change rooms, valet parking– and yes, a blow dry bar too. We could have spent our entire day (and maxed our credit card on yoga apparel, candles and jewellery), but alas. Owned by lifestyle brand mogul, Russell Simmons, and with the friendliest staff on-hand, we can hardly wait to go back for more.
Sweat Some More:
Because no trip to LA would be complete without at least one ride, Soul Cycle in West Hollywood or in Brentwood, gets our vote. Dark, loud and extremely motivating, it’s always worth the sweat equity. Not to mention the Soul branded apparel is totally worth checking out too. Should you hit the West Hollywood location, be sure to get a chocolate protein smoothie at Earthbar just beside. Yum!
To say The Detox Market is a ‘clean beauty’s heaven’ would be an understatement. Everything they carry is made from the greenest of ingredients, packaged beautifully from leading luxe brands. Among the many options, we found our favourite Shiva Rose and loaded-up accordingly. For supplements, the magic dust potions (and pretty much anything) from Moon Juice are sure-thing. And for no other reason than ‘just because’, we fell hard for Rahua’s Color Full Shampoo and One Love Organics Vitamin C serum.
Shop Some More:
For brands and shops with ‘beachy cool vibes’, a day along Abbot Kinney Boulevard in Venice Beach is a must. From housewares to organic cotton tees, sunglasses to denim, it’s all there. Same for cult-coffee shop Intelligentsia and pizza hot-spot, Gjelina. For mainstream brands and department stores, The Grove is where you’ll find them. An outdoor shopping complex, from Barneys to Nordstrom, JCrew to Vince, there’s also a Whole Foods and True Food Kitchen for healthy fare.
A plant-based Mexican restaurant, Gracias Madre is so creative and delicious, it’s no wonder this place is so buzzed about. And while reservations can be difficult, try sitting at the bar and ordering a bunch of plates to share. Among our favourites: The Young Coconut Ceviche with housemade chips, lime, jalapeno, cilantro and avocado. Followed with an entrée of tacos filled with barbecued jackfruit, and topped with cashew cream (yum!). Cocktail-wise, The Cazuela for Two got us at first sip. Clean tequila, refreshing grapefruit and lime. Full of flavour and not too sweet.
With A-list stars such as Adele, Charlize and Madonna among many other Ole Henriksen fans, it’s no wonder the Spa – more than twenty years on – remains a skin lover’s destination still today. Whether you want a red carpet hydrating facial or something more intense such as an 8-step complexion make-over, the beauty experts here will take good care of you. Be sure to arrive early and save extra time to browse the boutique for cult-favourite Ole products.
